You can control the height of the laser by timing B.
By inputting a backward direction on the control stick before lasering, you will shoot the other way. This can be used to fire a laser with retreating momentum from a shorthop.
Top foxes like Cody Schwab have increasingly begun to shoot such single retreating lasers. It is the hardest to punish and doesn't give up much stage control while still racking up damage.
It is easy to misinput side-B when attempting to retreating laser, so be careful! Try to go as far as possible with each retreating shorthop.
