On Battlefield, Yoshi's Story, and technically Dreamland N64, it is possible to double jump from ledge and get high enough to waveland on the side platform.
It is a hard-to-punish ledge escape option that can be used to mixup opponents expecting a prototypical Ledgedash. On Battlefield and Yoshi's Story, Laser landing is many frames faster but does not give you momentum and is arguably harder.
